StudySort vs Anki

Anki is the best-known spaced repetition app: you bring the cards and it schedules them. StudySort gives you the content: explanations, diagrams, flashcards and exam questions.

Short answer

For remembering a large number of facts over months, Anki's scheduling is the stronger tool. StudySort is for the step before that: understanding a topic and getting a set of cards and questions to start from.

What Anki does well

  • Schedules every card individually with spaced repetition, so you review each fact just before you would forget it.
  • Free and open source on desktop, Android and the web. The official iPhone app is a one-off purchase.
  • A large library of shared decks, and almost everything can be customised.

Where StudySort is different

  • Anki starts empty: you write or download every card. StudySort gives you ready-made topic guides and builds cards from your own notes.
  • StudySort explains the topic and includes exam-style questions with marking points, not just cards.
  • StudySort does not schedule reviews. If you want that, copy the flashcards into Anki, or use the free spaced repetition planner to plan topic reviews.

Use Anki if

  • You need to keep hundreds or thousands of facts for months, for example vocabulary or medicine.
  • You like adjusting settings and building your own cards.

Use StudySort if

  • You do not have cards yet and want a set to start from.
  • You need explanations and exam questions, not just recall.
  • You want something that works straight away with no setup.

Questions

Can I put StudySort flashcards into Anki?

Yes. Use the copy button on a set of flashcards and paste the cards into Anki. You may need to tidy the format, since StudySort copies plain text.

Is spaced repetition worth it for GCSEs?

Research on learning consistently finds that spreading reviews out beats cramming the same amount of time into one session. You do not need special software to do it: a plan that brings each topic back a few times before the exam already helps.
